About the Authors
Cary Kerst has a B.S. in entomology from Purdue University and an M.S. in entomology from Oregon State University. He has conducted professional aquatic insect surveys o要 Willow Creek and other local rivers and streams. He retired from a career in environmental science in 2003. In 2004, he was honored to have o要e of his discoveries from Willow Creek named after him, Capnia kersti, a new species of winter stonefly. Cary has been interested in dragonflies since his college studies in Indiana.
Steve Gordon has a B.S. in geography from the University of Oregon and spent 30 years as a planner with the Lane Council of Governments; the latter 17 years spent o要 the West Eugene Wetlands Project. He has been an avid birder since 1974. A dragonfly presentation by Dennis Paulson at a regional Society of Wetland Scientists conference in Tacoma in 1998 inspired him to learn more about odonates.
In 1999, Cary and Steve teamed up to try to identify local dragonflies. With initial, struggling success, they began to develop a checklist of West Eugene Wetlands odonates. By 2002, the idea for this local guidebook was hatched. Together, they lead local field trips and teach odonate classes. They share the joy of dragonflies and damselflies wherever they go.
